About me and my therapy practice

Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious or simply not engaged in life? Do you notice others around you seeming to be getting so much more out of life yet you seem to be 'just getting on with it'. Do you imagine that there could be more to your life?

There are times when we carry our experiences with us without realising- particularly childhood experiences. These influence how we experience the world everyday- whether we can ask for help, and use that help, even whether we interpret support as kindness or the other being fed up at having to help.

This is not about saying you had a 'bad childhood' or blaming your parents. This is about recognising that things were not ideal at the time, and this has had an effect on you, and perhaps your caregivers did they best they could. It's about coming to terms with how the past has affected us, recognising how we are affected and empowering us to move beyond these affects- just because we have experienced help coming from an exasperated caregiver does not mean that everyone around us is coming from the same place.

Working with me starts with working through your childhood, then making connections between this and your present- recognising when and why your child part has become triggered, acknowledging the connection with childhood feelings and consciously identifying that this is not the same scenario, and approaching it differently.

The process can take time and it can be difficult to re-experience your past, however you will not be alone with it. I can help you identify, manage and allow your feelings in an effort to being authentic and engaging in your present.

Practice description

I am a warm a nurturing counsellor, and my aim is to enable you to engage in and enjoy your life. To do this, we explore the past and how you have been affected by it- how you view yourself. Through processing the past and getting in touch with your feelings, your sense of self can become stronger, and gradually life becomes about fulfilling yourself as well as others.

Part of the work is that I open doors: offer up different perspectives to enable you to get a more robust, 3D image of yourself, your world, and how you can interact in and impact upon the outside world. I am very visual and will often use this in my work using colour, metaphor, and working with scenarios such as feeling like you are 'in a pit'.

I also think about the body: sometimes you can't identify a feeling but when we think about where in the body you are feeling it we can start to get a better idea of what is going on. I also feel that the work I do runs alongside spirituality in that the goal is to reach a 'higher frequency'- or in my words a more authentic version of yourself. It's about becoming more familiar with the skin you are in, looking after yourself and your world, and growing more robust and comfortable within yourself to allow more positive engagement from the outside world.

I offer face to face sessions in Worthing, or online via Zoom- I have found both to be effective. I like to approach this work as open ended, because I believe that having a time restraint puts unnecessary pressure on the work. Weekly sessions is ideal, particularly early on, but I offer fortnightly sessions as well. For me, this work is about providing a safe space that suits your needs, and these change throughout the work. The first step is reaching out, I can be alongside you after that.

My first session

Initial assessments last no more than 30 minutes, are not charged and will be carried out either over the telephone or via Zoom- please let me know of your preference.

This is a general chat to find out what you are looking for from your counselling and for us to 'get a feel' for each other. I generally will start with "why do you want to start counselling?" and we go from there. I will also go over my 'counselling agreement' with my terms and conditions regarding fees, attendance, confidentiality and gdpr- you will be given a copy of this to sign and for your records.

You are not committed to start counselling with me after the initial session, equally if you would like to go ahead and book your first full session we can do this depending on scheduling. I offer daytime sessions only (9-5) from Monday to Friday.
